Case Interviewing

If you are interested in consulting or other management roles, it is likely you will be asked to participate in a business case interview as part of your interview process. Case interviews are interviews in which a candidate is tasked with working through a hypothetical or real-life question, scenario, challenge, or problem. The goal is to present a solution that demonstrates an informed and strategic process. You are evaluated for your communication, problem solving skills, ability to ask relevant questions, industry knowledge, and organizational process, not necessarily on whether you produce a correct answer.

Types of case interview questions may include:

  • Growth strategies
  • New market entry
  • Profitability or pricing optimization
  • Industry analysis and competitor dynamics
  • Mergers and acquisitions
  • Start-up/early-stage venture
  • Product development
  • Market Entry / Expansion
  • Mergers and acquisitions (M&A)
  • Cost Reduction / Operational Efficiency

Tips for a successful case interview:

  • Learn what consultants do — research project types, client industries, and firm differences.
  • Familiarize yourself with top firms (MBB, Big 4, boutiques) and their cultures.
  • Stay updated on business / industry trends via LinkedIn, The Wall Street Journal, and others.
  • Start early — applications open as early as June for full-time roles and internships.
  • Develop a tailored resume that emphasizes problem-solving, leadership, and analytical skills.
  • Understand the case interview format: structured problem-solving, market sizing, and business scenarios.
  • Think aloud to demonstrate your logic clearly to the interviewer.
  • Make the interview conversational; engage the interviewer as a collaborator.
  • Use simple numbers and round when doing calculations unless exact precision is requested.
  • When analyzing data or exhibits, take your time and synthesize key takeaways.
  • For behavioral questions, use the STAR method and focus on results and impact.
  • Stay calm, confident, and coachable—even when you’re unsure of the answer.
