Interviewing for positions within this community can look a little different than in other fields. Make you research both the company and position to which you have applied. Be prepared to talk about current events in the field. You may be asked to evaluate a current ad campaign, or to critique the PR response to a current event. In some cases, you may be asked to complete a ‘case study’ ahead of your interview, like a homework assignment.

Reading industry publications like AdAge and PR Week will help you prepare. If you are applying for a data-centric, analytical role, you may be given a dataset and asked how you would use it to answer certain problems. You may be asked to talk through how you would find answers from the data, or to complete a test-like assignment.

For resumes targeting marketing, advertising & public relations opportunities…

Pay attention to the job posting you are responding to, and tailor your resume to fit. Some employers may mention that they want applicants with particular software skills; if they mention platforms that you have experience with, make sure your resume says so! Likewise, companies are increasingly using software to filter applications. Make sure that your cover letter and resume reflect some of the action words you see in the job posting.

Some positions, especially those in creative advertising and marketing jobs, may require a portfolio. Portfolios in the field can vary widely; while some may have a ‘traditional art portfolio’ others may have summaries of ad campaigns they have designed or run, collections of notes from customer feedback, or a portfolio of press releases you have written. Pay attention to the job posting for more information about what is required in a portfolio, or if it is at all.
