Key Responsibilities
• Performs a variety of duties in the operation of boilers and related auxiliary equipment.
• Lubricates auxiliary equipment as necessary.
• Monitors gauges, meters, and recording devices and makes adjustments as instructed to maintain specified pressures and temperatures.
• Assists in making ordinary repairs such as replacing gaskets, repackaging pumps, cleaning, scraping and washing out water boxes. Assists in making minor repairs to auxiliary equipment.
• Maintains records and makes entries on daily log.
• Monitors boilers, feed and circulating pumps, controls steam flow under direction of Watch Engineer.
• Collects water samples and tests to determine water quality. Records results and reports abnormalities to Watch Engineer.
Required Qualifications
• Basic technical and communication skills as normally attained through a high school education or the equivalent; and
• Some experience in the principle of operations of Thermal/Power Plant equipment, high pressure boilers, topping turbine and related auxiliary equipment preferred
• Any equivalent combination of education or experience.
• Department of Public Safety Massachusetts Second Class Fireman’s License preferred.
• Internship duration: May – September
Knowledge and Abilities
• Knowledge of operation of generating equipment, plant heating, large diesel-fuel engines and electrical distribution systems preferred.
• Knowledge of safety practices and application in steam engineering preferred.
• Skill in the operation of listed tools and equipment preferred.
